Why This Matters

We live in a time of perennial forgetfulness.

There has never been more information in the world, and yet so much of what matters most is still at risk of being lost.

While forgetting is natural, remembering is deeply human.

Lifescribing is the practice of remembering the best of us.

It was born from a simple but urgent belief: our stories live, or disappear, through the choices we make. What we write down, what we pass on, what we choose to honor, what we allow to end with us — all of these become part of the legacy we leave behind.

The Lifescribing Way

Lifescribing is not about writing everything. It is about writing what we must pass on. It is not about producing a perfect memoir or a polished biography. It is about paying attention to the moments, people, places, lessons, wounds, and wonders that made a life what it is.

At the heart of Lifescribing are three beliefs:

We are all Storykeepers.
Story does not belong only to writers, historians, or the gifted few. Every family has its keepers: the one who remembers the recipe, the one who tells the old stories, the one who saves the letters, the one who asks questions.

We are all Culture Bearers.
Culture does not survive in the hands of a few. It lives because ordinary people carry it forward through language, food, ritual, prayer, humor, memory, and the stories told around tables.

“This book is of enormous benefit to people in recovering their ancestral knowing and their roots and their stories. It is a brilliant and beautiful and a much-needed gift. I don’t know of any book that is devoted to this quest. I think it is magnificent.”

— Dr. Jean Houston, renowned visionary and scholar, one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement, and author of 29 bestselling books including “ A Passion for the Possible”, “Search for the Beloved”, “A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story”, and the Future Human trilogy.

Binky

I love the sharing portion and getting to know my fellow lifescribers. I also like the prompts given, very helpful! (I gained) a bit more confidence in writing. I also learned to make a daily habit out of legacy writing until it comes naturally and organically.

Weng

It was a welcoming space, not only for Joan welcoming the participants, but among participants too. Joan allowed everyone opportunity to share without being forceful. Considering that many participants knew each other, and I might be one of the "strangers" in the group, I didn't feel out of place at all. I liked the warm-up prompts to get us started, instead of diving into the core memories. I also liked the main prompts, including examples from Joan's own legacy journal. Her examples were helpful, especially to me who's not really into journalling. They allowed me to remember memories and experiences from my life as well. The prompts allowed me to explore different eras of my life, not just childhood per see.

Jo

Joan made us feel safe and guided us to be free to express ourselves. I was able to dig deep into myself and became more relaxed in writing the stories of my life.
